covers rule, goodbye Syd
Listening to:you're about to find out
Reading:GEB!
Weather:77, sticky
What could be better than Richard Thompson singing Oops, I Did It Again? (You can find that little jewel on Richard's album "A 1000 years of popular music," given to me by my lovely and generous friend Boomer.) How about another Britney Spears cover: Toxic by . . .Nickel Creek! Ifyou hurry you can listen to a delightful live recording at www.myspace.com/nickelcreek, go to the music player and click Toxic, if it's not already playing. While you're at it, enjoy the other tunes available on the player, all good. I especially like Eveline, which is very fresh, harmonic shades of Moxy Fruvous.

They're all covers to me, ya know. I got to enjoy playing with Randy and Daria today on the courthouse square at noon. Several of my friends, colleagues, and family showed up. Lovely weather, a bit sweaty but it's summer it should be. We were expected Jenny and Nathan, but they didn't show. No worries, we had plenty of good stuff to play.

Syd Barrett died, he was 60. I heard today on public radio that while the Beatles were recording Sgt Peppers at Abbey Road studios, Syd and the rest of Pink Floyd were recording Piper at the Gates of Dawn a few rooms down the hall. Astronomy Domine (say that 3 times fast), the Gnome, these guys were out there. Apparently the beautiful Shine On You Crazy Diamond is the band's homage to Syd after he left.

Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
you piper, you prisoner, and shine!
